Email Event Streams

Every production email program needs a record of what happened after send. Providers expose that record through webhooks, exports, activity APIs, or stream-style feeds. The ingestion design has to handle duplicates, late arrivals, terminal states, and different retention windows.

Event types and state

Delivery events are not all equal. Delivered, bounced, complained, unsubscribed, opened, and clicked should not overwrite each other blindly. Terminal events such as hard bounce and complaint should win over later engagement noise.

Push, pull, and export patterns

Webhooks provide low latency but require a public endpoint and retry handling. Pull APIs simplify firewall rules but add polling lag and retention risk. Exports work for audits and backfills, not live suppression.

Ordering and dedupe

Email events can arrive out of order. A click can arrive before delivered. A bounce can be retried several times. The consumer should dedupe by provider event ID when available, then apply state transitions with precedence rules.

Downstream uses

Event streams feed suppression, support debugging, customer timelines, deliverability monitoring, and revenue reporting. Each use has different latency needs. Suppression should be near-real-time. Analytics can tolerate batch sync.

reading this as early-stage startups

At an early stage the deciding factors are what the free tier actually covers, what the first paid invoice looks like, and how much of a founding engineer's week the setup costs. Feature depth that only matters at a million sends a month is noise until it is not.

Applied to email event streams, that means weighing free tier, best published rate per 1,000, entry price, and developer experience ahead of the rest, against a waitlist, a launch announcement, onboarding email, and the first transactional sends.
